Character NAME: Valvatorez.
Canon & MEDIUM: Disgaea 4 | Video game
Canon PULL-POINT: Following the Main Story of the game, pre-post game story mode.
Character AGE: No specifics, but he is at least 400 years old, and more than likely much, much older than that.
Character ABILITIES: Valvatorez has all of the abilities a typical vampire would be shown to have, except on a far greater level; incredible strength, speed, durability, heightened senses, extra supernatural senses, etc. He's also shown the ability to shapeshift, breaking his body apart into a swarm of bats and reforming into various forms such as a giant pair of fangs, bloody spikes capable of draining the blood from living beings, pure shadow, etc. He can also transform into a monstrous, demonic bat-like form, which not only towers over regular sized humans by a great amount but can unleash devastating sonic blasts.
Character HISTORY: Long ago, Valvatorez was one of the most feared demons in the netherworld; the Tyrant Valvatorez, a vampire so great and powerful that none could match him in combat. Mention of his name alone was enough to strike terror into the hearts of anyone who heard it. However, despite all of his power and the respect he commanded, he never sought out power like other demons. Typically, powerful demons fight their way to the top and become 'overlords', overlords beings demons stronger than any other on a certain netherworld and rule through power and fear on their own planet in the netherverse, the aforementioned netherworld. As a Tyrant class demon, Valvatorez was powerful enough to take anything he wanted by force, yet he stuck with the old traditions of demonkind; to spread fear on earth. By spreading fear, humans would not become complacent and live conservatively while also learning respect for their betters. In exchange, the fear they felt for demons kept the netherworlds alive and the demons inhabiting them strong, compared in-game to a human's need for oxygen and water. It was a natural order and one maintained in order to keep the universe alive and healthy; both the netherverse AND the human's universe. Things changed, however, when he met a woman named Artina on Earth. She met him during a vampire hunt, but she showed no fear towards him, even sympathizing with him for having to rely on the blood of humans. She offered her blood to him, in exchange for him never drinking the blood of anyone else in return. However, he declared his pride would not allow him to drink the blood of a human who doesn't fear him, so he promised not to drink her blood, or the blood of any other human, until he scares her. When he found out she was taking part in a war as a nurse, he offered to look over her until his promise was fulfilled so she wouldn't die in order to make sure he could fulfill his promise to her.
Then she died.
He felt it was his own fault for not taking the promise seriously. He "suffered greatly in his heart" as a result, which essentially meant he experienced regret and sorrow over his failing her and decided to never drink human blood again to keep that promise. As a result, he slowly grew weaker and weaker as the years passed until eventually he had a mere fraction of his old strength, going from a tyrant class demon to a prinny instructor. A prinny is an evil human soul that is repenting for it's sins in order to earn a chance at reincarnation, and it is the job of an instructor to make sure they work off their sins. According to the game, it's the lowest level scrub work available that only weak and useless demons apply for, so it's a nice indicator of how much power he lost as a result. Despite this he was apparently happy with his new conditions. He enjoyed his job and found it satisfying. Sometime during his time as a prinny instructor, all of the prinnies under his watch are captured. He tracks them down only to find that the Warden of Hades had captured the prinnies to exterminate them, under orders from the corrupternment(netherworld government) because the netherworld was overpopulated, so they were being killed to make room for the demonic populace and to mitigate the state of the strained resources that was spread too thin already, not nearly enough to sustain the entire population of the netherworld.
Later, during a run-in with a girl named Fuuka(a prinny who, instead of becoming a prinny, was simply given a hat shaped like the head of one), he determines that the corrupternment is attempting to spark a prinny civil war and wipe themselves out in the hopes the populace at large will never find out about the overpopulation issue. Deeming the corrtupternment…well, corrupt, he vows to overthrow them and set the netherworld straight, which started with putting an end to the war before it even started by wiping out the corrupternment officials sent to start the conflict.
Along the way he recruits several characters who join his party; Fuuka, the aforementioned prinny girl, Desco, an organic weapon who aspires to be a final boss, Emizel, the son of the corrupternment's president and Vulcanus, an angel who is in fact the human Artina now an angel. Along with Fenrich, his loyal werewolf Vassal, Valvatorez leads the five into battle against all of the corrupternment's forces and fights his way into the center of their headquarters where the president awaits. They defeat him only to find that for years the entire corrupternment has been in fact been under the control of a human named Nemo. As it turns out, humanity has advanced so much in their technology that they no longer fear demons, only themselves. As a result the required fear energy stayed on Earth, causing the netherworld to diminish greatly. Eventually, Nemo struck a deal with the netherworld president which involved trading fear energy for demon subjects for them to research. However, demonkind was so desperate for fear energy that they got practically nothing in exchange and the minimal amounts of fear energy they WERE given wasn't enough to sustain them. The netherworld was slowly being destroyed. Nemo then reveals himself to the party as not only the one running the netherworld through monopolizing fear energy, but also the human world from behind the scenes, having total control over both. He reveals himself as a self-declared judge of humanity, deciding humanity itself is sin and needs to be destroyed. He offers Valvatorez the chance to join him, but Valvatorez outright refuses, claiming that his intention is to discipline humans and demons and restore the natural order of the universe, not destroy it.
Nemo escapes to the human world, with Valvatorez and the party in hot pursuit. There, Nemo reveals he has used the demon subjects he obtained from the corrupternment to create an army of cloned demons he would use to invade Earth, kill all of humanity and ruin the planet. However, with the netherworld needing human's fear energy and heaven needing humanity's awe and worship to survive, this would mean the end of all three worlds should Nemo succeed, which it turns out was his plan all along. However, they defeat his army and put a stop to that plan.
He then reveals his backup plan to destroy the moon through manipulating an Alien Race into thinking humanity is growing too fast and are becoming a major threat to the universe. However, Valvatorez and the party stop them as well and foil Nemo's backup plan.
Nemo laughs off their victory however, claiming that no matter how many times they try to stop him, he'll keep trying no matter what. He is interrupted by the activation of a device known as Fear the Great; it's somewhat similar to a computer program created through magic within the core of earth, which is designed to activate when humanity becomes too dangerous and destroy them. It is fueled by hatred and malice, making Nemo, who harbors hatred for not only humanity, but also angels, demons, aliens, the universe, even god himself, the perfect battery. It absorbs him into it's core and begins to create an army of creatures born from hatred which are consumed with the desire to destroy everything. Valvatorez brings his party to the center of the earth's core and locates Fear the Great, fighting their way through the horde of monsters created by the device, confronting Nemo(now possessed by the device) and defeating him once and for all, which also shuts down Fear the Great and saves heaven, hell and earth from total destruction.
Character PERSONALITY: Valvatorez is, at heart, a demon. He shows no aversion towards violence and terrorized humanity in his old days as a tyrant(hinted to be through violence and nonconsensual acts of blood drinking against humans) to the point people organized vampire hunts to end his antagonization of villages and their populaces. He's also prone to resorting to violence to set people straight and prove a point. What sets Valvatorez aside from his demonic compatriots, however, is he possesses a proud and noble soul. He despises underhanded tactics, selfishness, violence for the wrong reasons, people who go back on their word, etc. He was disgusted with Fuuka when it turned out she was killing prinnies in order to better her living conditions, became disappointed when he found out the corrupternment were taking shortcuts to fixing problems that in the long term would do more harm than good and should someone around him go back on a promise they have made he can become enraged at the idea. His noble temperament is shown to dictate all of his actions; in the past, he terrorized humans only to keep them in line and provide the netherworld with the fear energy it needed, he is harsh to prinnies under his instruction so they work off their sins faster, even going so far as to chastise humanity for their preferred method of war because he finds nothing honorable in settling your disputes by sending other people to fight for you. The fact is, Valvatorez is best described as Lawful good, someone who does what is necessary and expected of them, no matter what that may be. He acknowledges that demons are, as a whole, evil creatures but that their brutal nature is required to keep humanity in line. There's no problem with terrorizing humanity as much as is needed so the universe is kept balanced, for the sake of the greater good. He shows great pride for his demonic heritage, which is why he acts in a refined and honorable manner, as acting otherwise would besmirch his nature as a demon and disrespect it, something he would never allow. He also questions other people who resort to underhanded tactics, questioning whether or not they have self-respect or pride in themselves at all. This is where his inherently good nature works against him.
The problem with Valvatorez acting much kinder than normal demons is he can come across as naive and gullible in the wrong circumstances. He trusts almost everyone on their word, having been described as possessing an "undoubting heart" by Fenrich. This is shown prominently in the story, such as when Fuuka tells him she believes she isn't really in the netherworld, but that this is all a dream. He believes her, questioning whether he's a real person or just a part of a young girl's dream. Also, when Fenrich lies to the corrupternment's assassins and tells them that the Warden of Hades, who Valvatorez and Fenrich had been fighting the whole time, is in fact a traitor who has been siding with Valvatorez and Fenrich even describing him as the "most passionate believer in the rebellion against the corrupternment", Valvatorez believes him. He at first expresses his surprise, but then gets too wrapped up in the lie as if it's real, even going so far as to mourn the supposed death of the Warden and promises to "carry on leading the rebellion in his memory." When later it's revealed that the Warden faked his death and declares he was never their ally, Valvatorez argues that the real Warden would never betray them and that this new Warden is a fake. His gentle and trusting nature is his biggest flaw, which holds back an otherwise astute and wise man.
His nature is also what makes him bond closely with people much quicker than the average demon, or even human being; he takes on Emizel and Desco to the party when he sees they are young and inexperienced, wishing to guide them along to achieve their goals after having known them for a very short amount of time. He seems to expand his prinny instructor role into a general mentor mentality, helping Desco learn the ways of being a true final boss who video game protagonists all over would fear while helping Emizel find his sense of self and grow out of the shadow of his father and identify as "Emizel" rather than the "Son of the Netherworld President." He also never gives up on helping people if he thinks it's really what they need, but he knows his boundaries. If people really want to do something they have decided on that he is against the idea of, or they object to something he says strongly or passionately enough, he'll gladly step back and allow them to do their own thing, often knowing that it's for the best they learn to make decisions themselves sometimes as well and that he shouldn't guide them every step of the way. Sometimes he even purposefully suggests a flawed course of action to those he is trying to help, hoping they will see the error in what he is suggesting and argue against it, allowing them to grow as a person and learn to make decisions for themselves. On the flip side to this, when he thinks people are really misguided and acting poorly, he'll be as harsh as necessary to set them straight, which again ties in with his belief that as long as a positive outcome is reached, that things others may view as bad are necessary.
Valvatorez is passionate about everything he does, with a tendency to be overly dramatic. He overstates the importance of things(sardines being the best example, he is obsessed with them and believes they are the source of ULTIMATE POWER!!1) but even in moments it isn't called for, such as mourning the death of the Warden(everyone but Valvatorez at the scene realizes his death is just being faked, plus he had no reason to mourn him as they were enemies) or giving inspirational speeches at the top of his voice to everyone which ultimately leads to nothing, ending anticlimactically.(When someone mentions the Overlord Minetrose is out to kill Valvatorez, he takes on a much darker attitude and speaks his name as if they were age old enemies; however, when someone asks if he had a past run-in with Minetrose, Valvatorez immediately returns to his cheerful disposition and shrugs, saying he has never heard of him before in his entire life.) However, this also makes him incredibly determined. Everytime something new shows up to get in his way, he rarely reacts poorly and simply vows to kill this new obstacle(even going so far as to openly oppose the entire universe and god himself((and even going so far as to attempt to kill god in a timeline where God in turn attempted to kill Valvatorez for becoming too powerful.)) He never gives up, never loses hope and believes there is always a way to achieve victory. If there's one thing that can be said about Valvatorez, it's that despair is not a thing he ever gives into.
